Spinel is a rare mineral with a rich range of hues, ranging from transparent to opaque. It has high hardness and a glassy luster, often in an octahedral shape.
Spinel stones are adorned with the Monomakh's Cap and the Vittelsbach Crown, although they were previously believed to be rubies. The most famous deposits are found in Thailand, Vietnam, India, and Australia. Valuable red specimens are found in Myanmar, while blue gems are extracted in Sri Lanka.
The stone has a hardness of 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale.
